The Story of the Autograph
Brian Moehler is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. His 14-year career lasted from 1996 to 2010 and during that time he played for the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros (twice), and Florida Marlins.
Moehler was born and raised in North Carolina. He attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was drafted by the Tigers in the sixth round of the 1993 MLB Draft. He was called up to make his major league debut three years later on September 22, 1996. He only pitched in two game to close that first season but he was set to make the big club the next year.
He alternated bad and good years in Detroit, but wasn’t too far from a .500 pitcher in those first years in the Motor City. Unfortunately a 10-16 season in 1999 where he led the AL in losses was a dark spot on his record. But he was there for the last game in Tiger Stadium and the first game at Comerica Park. It was great for him that he won both games. In 2001 and 2002 he dealt with injuries and was eventually traded to the Reds.
He pitched 2003 with the Astros and then took the 2004 season off and came back with the Marlins. He started to work in relief a bit more and didn’t have a great record with the Marlins. He then moved on to the Astros in free agency and closed out his career with four seasons in Houston.
His best season was probably 1998 in Detroit. He went 14-13 with a 3.90 ERA in 33 starts and 221.1 innings with 123 strikeouts.
The Score on Brian Moehler – 6.5
I think my favorite part of Brian’s signature is his “B”. I love how the bottom of it loops and connects it with his last name. This is another signature that is semi-stacked. He doesn’t put both names on top of each other, but they aren’t on the same line either.
Thanks Mr. Moehler! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
