The Story of the Autograph
Brian Mitchell is a former running back and kick returner in the NFL. He played for the Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, and New York Giants from 1990 to 2003.
Mitchell was born and raised in Louisiana. He went to the University of Southwestern Louisiana which is now called the University of Louisiana at Lafayette and played quarterback there. While there he was the first player in NCAA history to have 5,000 passing and 3,000 rushing yards. He also held the NCAA record for rushing yards as a quarterback with 47. Washington drafted him in the fifth round of the 1990 NFL Draft.
His NFL career started well enough by returning the opening kickoff int he first pre-season game. He would get to play quarterback that first year in what is known as “The Body Bag Game” after Washington’s other QBs were out of the game. In his second season he led the league in punt return yards and punt return touchdowns and helped the team win Super Bowl XXVI against the Bills.
He moved on to the Eagles in 2000 and played for them for three years. Despite that, he left the team as the franchise’s leader in punt return yards and still hold thats record. He finised out his career in New York with the Giants in 2003.
He is the NFL career leader in kick (14,014) and punt (4,999) return yards. He made one Pro Bowl (1995) and was a First-team All-Pro that same year (he was Second-team All-Pro twice in 1991 and 1994). He’s also part of Washington’s Ring of Fame, their 90 Greatest and the 70th Anniversary Team.
The Score on Brian Mitchell – 7.5
Brian is a local hero of sorts, as any former NFLer might be in a town they won a Super Bowl in. But I think his small stature, that he came from a small school and made his way in a position that he didn’t play in school, and then basically kill career numbers for returning, all help make him a great around DC. He’s also on the radio around here and definitely not afraid to tell it like it is. That makes it an even better signature I think when you add all that about him. But this came out pretty well too and its a really cool image on the card.
Thanks Mr. Mitchell! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
