The Story of the Autograph
Brad Arnsberg’s journey in baseball is one of resilience and adaptability, both on the mound and in the dugout. Known for his brief but memorable pitching career in Major League Baseball (MLB) and later as a successful pitching coach, Arnsberg’s story showcases the importance of determination and a deep love for the game.
Bradley James Arnsberg was born on August 20, 1963, in Seattle, Washington. Growing up with a passion for sports, Arnsberg excelled as a pitcher in high school, catching the attention of college recruiters. He went on to attend Merced College in California, where his performance on the mound solidified his status as a prospect. In the 1983 MLB Draft, the New York Yankees selected Arnsberg in the first round (ninth overall) of the secondary phase. His path to the majors had begun, though it would be far from smooth.
Arnsberg made his MLB debut on September 6, 1986, with the Yankees. His first stint in the big leagues showed promise, but like many young pitchers, he struggled with consistency and injuries. In 1987, he was traded to the Texas Rangers, where he spent parts of three seasons. Known for his hard work and tenacity, Arnsberg pitched both as a starter and a reliever. His best season came in 1990 when he recorded a 2.15 ERA in 62.2 innings pitched.
After his time with the Rangers, Arnsberg played for the Cleveland Indians before retiring as a player in 1992. Over his career, he posted a 9-6 record with a 4.26 ERA across 94 appearances. While his time on the mound was relatively short, Arnsberg’s perseverance through injuries and setbacks laid the foundation for his future success in baseball.
Arnsberg’s passion for the game didn’t end with his playing career. Instead, he turned to coaching, where he truly made his mark. Known for his sharp understanding of pitching mechanics and his ability to connect with players, Arnsberg quickly rose through the coaching ranks. In the early 2000s, Arnsberg became a pitching coach for the Montreal Expos, helping to develop young talent like Javier Vázquez. He continued to build his reputation with the Florida Marlins, Texas Rangers, and Toronto Blue Jays, where he worked with star pitchers like Roy Halladay and A.J. Burnett.
Arnsberg’s coaching style was characterized by a hands-on approach and a focus on tailoring his guidance to each pitcher’s individual needs. His work was widely respected, and many credit him with helping pitchers unlock their potential.
Arnsberg’s coaching career extended into the 2010s, including a stint with the Houston Astros. While injuries ended his playing days prematurely, his contributions to baseball as a coach have had a lasting impact. Beyond his professional career, Arnsberg has remained dedicated to baseball, working with young players and sharing his wealth of knowledge. His journey from first-round draft pick to respected coach is a testament to his determination and love for the sport.
The Score on Brad Arnsberg – 6.5
I love Brad’s signature. I also love how he changes up the marker he uses based on the team he is representing on the card, with those Yankees cards being signed in black. He has one of those signatures that I don’t know if you could say you could read it, but you can definitely recognize that its his.
Thanks Mr. Arnsberg! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
This is my fourth successful return from him. To see the other successful returns, check out these posts:
