The Story of the Autograph
Bonnie Blair is a retired speed skater. She was one of the best speed skaters of her time and one of the best Olympians ever after competing in four Olympic games.
Blair was born in norther New York state, her godmother a Canadian speed skater Cathy Priestner. She moved to Illinois when she was very young and started skating at the age of two as her siblings did and she went to her first meet at the age of four. She won her age group at seven for Illinois. Then in high school she added cheerleading to her athletic efforts. But she didn’t start the speed skating we know her for until her godmother started coaching her in 1979. At 15 she made the national team and started focusing on the 1984 Olympics, going to Europe to train. Local folks helped by sponsoring her. She got her high school diploma via the mail in 1982, then she moved to Milwaukee to train with the U.S. Team.
She made the 1984 team but didn’t medal and really wasn’t expected to. After that she started finding success more and more and that included the 1986 short track world championship which is how her skating career started. In 1988 her Olympic success started:
- 1988 Calgary: Gold 500m, Bronze 1000m
- 1992 Albertville: Gold 500m, Gold 1000m
- 1994 Lillehammer: Gold 500m, Gold 1000m
After her successful career she worked with charities and served on U.S. Speedskating’s board of directors. She’s also worked as a motivational speaker.
The Score on Bonnie Blair – 6.5
This came out great from Bonnie. I definitely appreciate the extra post card that she signed. As always, an autograph with a repeat letter starting the first and last name comes out pretty well. I actually like the Allen & Ginter card because there ‘s so much white space that shows off the autograph.
Thanks Ms. Blair! I’m giving this return a 6.5. overall.
