The Story of the Autograph

Bob Shirley is a former left-handed pitcher in the majors leagues he started out primarily as a starter and transitioned to mostly pitching in relief before the end of his career. He played from 1977 through 1987 with the Padres, Cardinals, Reds, Yankees and Royals.

Shirley was born and raised in Oklahoma and was first drafted by the Dodgers in 1972. He was drafted again in 1975 by the Giants and didn’t sign again. Then he was drafted again in 1975 (in a secondary phase of the draft which doesn’t work the same way today) by the Padres and chose to sign with them. He went directly to Double-A in 1976 and then made his debut for the Padres the next season on April 10, 1977 and wouldn’t play in the minors again.

His rookie season was one of his best. He had a 12-18 record but a 3.70 ERA with 146 strikeouts in 214 innings (most of those career highs). It was the only year he would be a full-time starter though. He started out the next season behind Gaylord Perry in the rotation but then moved to the bullpen. He would end up being traded to the Cardinals. Then he was traded to the Reds the next Spring Training.

He signed with the Yankees the next year and spent several years there. He had some pretty bad outings though which usually resulted in not pitching for a little while. Then in 1987 he was involved in an incident in the clubhouse in which he was messing around and it resulted in Don Mattingly injuring his back and going on the DL. The Yankees released him after that. He signed with the Royals but didn’t pitch too well for them.

The Score on Bob Shirley – 6.5

Bob has a mix of a herky-jerky and loopy signature. He signs pretty well though and used a good marker. He’s pretty consistent about where he signs too and doesn’t appear to look for any ideal spot. I have a much older return from Bob and these definitely look like improvements over that old success.

Thanks Mr. Shirley! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
