The Story of the Autograph
Bob Lacey is a former left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1977 to 1984 with Oakland Athletics, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, California Angels, and San Francisco Giants.
Lacey was born in Fredericksburg, Virginia but grew up in Tucson, Arizona. He went to Central Arizona Community College where he was drafted by the A’s in the tenth round of the 1972 MLB Draft. He started off his minor league career great with a 13-2 record and then things went a bit down hill. But with the A’s dynasty ending, he got a chance at the majors and made his debut on May 13, 1977.
He started off pretty well. In just his fourth game he struck out Reggie Jackson twice and that didn’t go two well with Reggie. He’d also later brawl with Darrell Porter and the Royals. But he was a very reliable reliever in the early years. He inherited 104 runners in 1978 but still went 8-9 with a career best 3.01 record in a league leading 74 games in 1978. He started to have injuries and then didn’t get along with Billy Martin, which is probably not a surprise.
In 1981 he was traded to San Diego which started a lot of moving around. The Padres turned him immediately in a deal with the Indians, then the Rangers. He fell out of the majors in 1982 and then was back with the Angels in 1983 and the Giants in 1984 before bouncing around the minors in 1985 and finally retiring.
He later managed a minor league team. But he also decided to go out and pitch for them a few times in the 1988 and ’89 seasons.
The Score on Bob Lacey – 6.5
Bob has a pretty fancy and swirly signature. That includes that little flourish at the end of his last name. The 1978 Topps card came out by far the best. But what really sticks out about that card is the seemingly day-glo yellow jersey and how it came out on that card.
Thanks Mr. Lacey! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
