The Story of the Autograph
Bill Ranford is a former goaltender in the National Hockey League. He played from 1985 to 2000 with the Boston Bruins (twice), Edmonton Oilers (twice), Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Detroit Red Wings.
Ranford was born in Manitoba but grew up in British Columbia. He played junior hockey with the New Westminster Bruins for two years before being drafted by the Bruins in the third round of the 1985 NHL Draft. That same year he was named to the WHL All-Star game before appearing in his first NHL games. He was back in the minors the next season and then was moved back up, but then was traded to the Oilers.
He played for 10 years total with the Oilers, the most of any place he’d play during his time in the league. He started as the backup for Grant Fuhr, but later he had some really great years including not only being a big part of the 1989-90 Stanley Cup Winning team but also winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. He was later dealt back to the Bruins and then bounced around a bit.
After his playing career he did a little acting as the goaltender in the 2004 movie Miracle as the on-ice goalie representing Jim Craig. He also has worked as a goaltending coach which is what he currently does with the Kings.
The Score on Bill Ranford – 6.0
Bill has a bit of a small signature. But maybe that’s somewhat of a good thing as it looks like he’s trying to squeeze a signature into a spot where it will show off the signature better. That can be pretty tough on hockey cards. I think my favorite of these is the Upper Deck card with the trophy.
Thanks Mr. Ranford! I’m giving this return a 6.
