The Story of the Autograph
Bill Parsons is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He was primarily a starter from 1971 to 1974 and played for the Milwaukee Brewers and Oakland Athletics.
Parsons is a native of Riverside, California. He was drafted by the Seattle Pilots in the seventh round of the 1968 MLB Draft out of Riverside Community College. While the Pilots became the Brewers he played in their minor league system. He made his major league debut for the club on April 13, 1971.
He played stuck in the majors right away and put up a 13-17 record with a 3.20 ERA in 36 games with 35 starts. That wasn’t too bad while playing for a last place team. He placed second in the official Rookie of the Year award voting to Chris Chambliss, but was named AL Rookie of the Year by The Sporting News. He followed that up with another 13-win season, this time with only 13 losses and a 3.91 ERA.
In 1973 he saw his opportunities dry up a bit, appearing and starting in under 30 games, down to 17 starts in 20 appearances. Then in 1974 he was traded with cash to the Oakland Athletics for Deron Johnson. He would only make four relief appearances for them.
The Cardinals bought out his contract before the end of 1974 and they would trade him to the White Sox as a player to be named later in a deal that brought them Buddy Bradford. But Parsons made his last major league appearances with the A’s.
The Score on Bill Parsons – 5.5
Bill has a nice signature. It sort of on the edge of fancy. I just don’t think that the pen did him much good on this one. Sometimes a bad pen, plus an older card, is not a great mix. What I do love about this card though is those early action shots on the 1970’s cards.
Thanks Mr. Parsons! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
