The Story of the Autograph
Barry Foote is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1973 to 1982 with the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees.
Foote was born and raised in Smithfield, North Carolina. He was drafted by the Expos in the first round of the 1970 MLB Draft with the third overall pick. He made his major league debut for the them on September 14, 1973. At the time he was a highly regarded rookie who had played well as an All-Star in the minors.
His career started off well. In his first full season of 1974 he hit .262 with eleven homers and 60 RBI. And when Gary Carter was coming up to the bigs the next season, they moved Carter to play the outfield more so they could play both players. But unfortunately the injuries that he had through his career started that year and by the end of the season he had surgery on his knees for torn cartilage. The Expos would end up trading Foote to the Phillies along with Dan Warthen for Wayne Twitchell and Tim Blackwell.
Throughout the rest of his career he was primarily a back up. After 1976 he only played in more than 100 games once, with Chicago in 1979. But the next year a back injury would hurt his playing time. He played his final major league game on August 8, 1982 for the Yankees.
After playing he worked as a scout, managed in the Yankees and Blue Jays systems and coached in the majors with the White Sox and Mets.
The Score on Barry Foote – 6.5
Barry has a pretty cool signature but I wish the cards I had for him to sign let him show it off a bit more. The 1983 Topps card isn’t too bad for it. I love the big “B”. The “F” is a little bit different. It looks like and “F” when you look at it by itself but when you look at the whole signature it seems like a completely different letter. I think that’s because of the transition from first to last name.
Thanks Mr. Foote! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
