The Story of the Autograph

Andy McGaffigan is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues who worked as both a starter and a reliever during his career. He played from 1981 to 1991 for the New York Yankees, San Francisco Giants (twice), Montreal Expos (twice), Cincinnati Reds, and Kansas City Royals.

McGaffigan was born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida. He went on to attend Palm Beach Community College, and Florida Southern College. He was drafted out of all three, but didn’t sign until the last. The first two times he was drafted were in 1974 in the 36th round by the Reds out of high school and then out of Community College in 1976 by the White Sox in the fifth round. The last time he was drafted was in 1978 by the Yankees in the sixth round and he finally signed with them. He debuted with them a few years later on September 22, 1981.

He pitched in two games at the end of 1981 and then the Yankees traded him to the Giants. That would be the first of five trades in his career. He got his first big real shot with the Giants in 1983 when he appeared in 43 games with 16 starts. He put up a 3-9 record with a 4.29 ERA. But in all the moving around, his best years were in his second stint with Montreal.

Between 1986 and 1988 with the Expos he went 21-7. Most of that was as a reliever with only 14 starts in the first of those season. His ERA in Montreal was drastically different than anywhere else. With the Expos in his career he had a 2.92 ERA but had a 3.38 for his career and with the Reds and Giants he had an ERA over four. But he did just about everything with the Expos: started, middle relief and closed some games.

Andy has a pretty fun signature. Obviously that’s best when you can see it. The blue he used goes great with the Expos cards and got a little buried on the Royals card. But I think the best example of it is the Reds card. I know I’ve been noting when other guys change things up on their cards, but you can see Andy uses the same bible verse.

Thanks Mr. McGaffigan! I’m giving this return a 7.
