The Story of the Autograph
Andy Asby pitched in the major leagues for 14 years. He played with the Phillies (twice), Rockies, Padres (twice), Braves, and Dodgers. He was a starting pitcher and made the All-Star Game twice with the Padres in 1998 and 1999.
The Phillies picked up Ashby as an undrafted free agent in 1986 and he would spend 5+ years in the minors before making his debut in 1991. That year Andy became the 24th pitcher in major league history to have a perfect strike-throwing inning (nine strikes and three strikeouts) against the Reds. In 1993 he was taken by the Rockies in the expansion draft. The Rockies traded him to the Padres at the end of the season.
San Diego was where he spent the most significant time and put in the most work as a starting pitcher. He fought through injuries to his shoulder, elbow and back but found the most success of anywhere he would be in his career. That included a trip to the World Series in 1998 when he had a 17-9 record and a 3.34 ERA. In his eight seasons in San Diego he went 70-62 (over 70% of his career win total) with a 3.59 ERA.
He jumped around after the Padres traded him to the Phillies in 2000 but he did make it back to the playoffs with the Braves that year. Then in 2003 he underwent Tommy John Surgery and made a brief two-game return for the Padres in 2004.
The Score on Andy Ashby – 6.0
I sent Andy three of the same card so I’m not surprised he didn’t sign them all, but the did at least send everything back. I have some other cards signed from Andy and they came out a little better than these. There’s a bit of shakiness to these. The one thing I like is that it looks like his name is a lot longer than it really is with the way he signs his card. When it’s nice and clean his signature is a good one and those loops make it stand out.
Thanks Mr. Ashby! These get a 6.
