The Story of the Autograph

Adrian Dantley is a former professional basketball played in the NBA. He played from 1976 to 1991 with the Buffalo Braves, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Lakers, Utah Jazz, Detroit Pistons, Dallas Mavericks and Milwaukee Bucks.

Dantley was born and raised in the Washington, D.C. metro area. He played his high school basketball at DeMatha Catholic for the great Morgan Wootten. He went on to attend the University of Notre Dame where he was a two-time first-team All-American and still ranks as one of the Fighting Irish’s best career scorers. He was also part of Notre Dame’s historic, winning streak-breaking upset of UCLA as a freshman. He also played for the 1976 U.S. Olympic team that won a gold medal in the Montreal Olympics.

He declared for the NBA Draft after his junior season and was taken by the Buffalo Braves in with the sixth overall pick in the first round of the 1976 NBA Draft. He was then the third consecutive Braves player to win the Rookie of the Year award after the 1977 season. He then became the first Rookie of the Year to be traded after his firs season when he was sent to the Pacers.

In the end Dantley was moved around a lot in his career but he spent the most time with the Utah Jazz from 1979 to 1986. But that didn’t seem to stop him. He still won the aforementioned Rookie of the Year, was a six-time All-Star, two -time All-NBA Second Team, Comeback Player of the Year in 1984 and a two-time NBA scoring champion in 1981 and 1984. He after averaged more than 30 points per game four times in his career – consecutively from 1981 to 1984. All that helped him to be named to the Basketball Hall of Fame.

I really wish I had some cards from the heart of Adrian’s career. Unfortunately this was all I really had to send to him. But it’s always really nice to get the “HOF” on a card. I think it took me a bit to figure out that’s what it said, but now that I know it’s there I of course dig it.

Thanks Mr. Dantley! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
