The Story of the Autograph
Adam Burt is a former defenseman in the NHL. Known for his solid defensive play, leadership qualities, and willingness to do the dirty work, Burt became a staple on the blue line for several teams during his 14-year NHL career. From 1988 to 2001 he played with the Hartford Whalers/Carolina Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, and Atlanta Thrashers.
Burt, born on January 15, 1969, in Detroit, Michigan, had his journey to the NHL begin in the hockey-rich Motor City, where he grew up dreaming of playing professional hockey. His early years were spent developing his skills and understanding of the game, eventually leading him to the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he played for the North Bay Centennials.
Burt’s size, toughness, and defensive instincts quickly set him apart, making him a key player for the Centennials and catching the attention of NHL scouts. In 1987, Burt was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the second round of the NHL Entry Draft, 39th overall. The Whalers, a team known for their passionate fan base and competitive spirit, saw Burt as a promising young defenseman who could bring stability to their blue line.
Burt made his NHL debut with the Hartford Whalers during the 1988-89 season, quickly establishing himself as a reliable presence on the back end. His style of play was characterized by physicality, shot-blocking, and a commitment to defensive responsibilities. Burt wasn’t known for his offensive production, but his ability to shut down opposing forwards and clear the front of the net made him a valuable asset.
During his time with the Whalers, Burt became a fan favorite for his gritty play and dedication to the team. He was a steadying force on the blue line during a time when the Whalers were battling for playoff contention in a competitive Adams Division. Burt’s leadership on and off the ice earned him the respect of his teammates, and he served as an alternate captain for the Whalers, a testament to his influence in the locker room.
In 1999, after nearly a decade with the Whalers/Hurricanes, Burt was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers. His time with the Flyers was marked by more of the same dependable defensive play that had defined his career. Burt provided depth and experience to a Flyers team that was perennially in the hunt for the Stanley Cup during the late 1990s.
Following his stint in Philadelphia, Burt played briefly for the Atlanta Thrashers before retiring after the 2000-01 season. Over the course of his career, Burt played in 737 NHL games, scoring 37 goals and adding 110 assists for 147 points, along with 964 penalty minutes. While his offensive numbers were modest, his contributions to his teams were invaluable, particularly in the defensive zone.
After retiring from professional hockey, Adam Burt took a different path than many of his contemporaries. Rather than moving into coaching or broadcasting, Burt chose to focus on his personal life and faith. He became deeply involved in his local community, dedicating much of his time to Christian ministry. Burt’s commitment to his faith led him to serve as a pastor, where he has been able to inspire and support others in their spiritual journeys.
The Score on Adam Burt – 7.0
Adam has a great big signature. There’s not a lot to it other than maybe the capital letters, but he sure can fill up the card with what he does put on there. I really love those old Hartford colors and uniforms, and the marker goes really great with them. My favorite of this return is the 1990 Score card.
Thanks Mr. Burt! I’m giving this return a 7.
