The Story of the Autograph
John Montague is a former right handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1973 to 1980 with the Montreal Expos, Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, and California Angels.
Montague was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. He stayed in Tidewater area to attend Old Dominion University. The first team that came calling was the White Sox who picked him in the 15th round of the 1965 MLB Draft but he chose not to sign. He was drafted by the Orioles in the third round of the 1967 MLB Draft and signed. But before he could make it to the majors the Orioles traded him to the Expos in 1973.
He made his major league debut came before the end of the 1973 on September third. He pitched in relief in both Montreal and when he was moved to Philly in 1975. After not appearing in the majors in 1976, the Seattle Mariners purchased him from the Phillies and he was part of the first Mariners team. He made 15 starts in his 47 appearances in 1977 and had an 8-12 record and earned the first save in franchise history. But he would go back to being a full time reliever after that.
He was traded to the Angels in 1979 and had his final season in 1980.
The Score on John Montague – 7.0
John signed in a thin enough marker to make it look as if its a ball point pen. But upon closer inspection it’s not. It came out a lot stronger than if it was a ball point and didn’t cut into the card so much. It actually came out pretty well for as thin as it is and sticks out pretty well on these cards.
Thanks Mr. Montague! I’m giving this return a 7.
