The Story of the Autograph
Darrell Whitmore is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1993 to 1995 with the Florida Marlins and then played in Japan in 1996 with the Chiba Lotte Marines.
Whitmore was born and raised in Front Royal, Virginia. He went on to play at West Virginia University in both football and baseball. In 1988 he was a freshman safety and was great in their undefeated season until breaking his leg. The team went on to lose to Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. He also played right field for the Mountaineers baseball team.
He was originally drafted by the Blue Jays in the tenth round of the 1987 MLB Draft and then again by the Blue Jays in the 58th round of the 1988 MLB Draft, but never signed. Then the Indians drafted him in 1990 in the second round and he signed. He never appeared in the majors as an Indian though. Instead he was drafted by the Marlins in the 1992 Expansion Draft.
He made his major league debut on June 25, 1993 during the Marlins inaugural seasons in Major League Baseball. He got into 76 games that first season and hit .204 with four home runs and 19 RBI. That would be the most significant time he spent in the majors but he did appear in 36 more games for the Marlins across the next two seasons.
The Score on Darrell Whitmore – 7.0
Darrell almost looks like he puts a line down on the card before he signs. I can make out some of the letters in his signature but really I think that line kind of gets in the say a little bit. I like how the look of that Upper Deck card looks, but I really wish I had more of those Classic cards to get signed.
Thanks Mr. Whitmore! I’m giving this return a 7.
