The Story of the Autograph
Kyle Hendricks is a right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He’s spent his entire career with the Chicago Cubs since starting in 2014.
Hendricks was born and raised in California. The Los Angeles Angels drafted him in the 39th round of the 2008 MLB Draft but he never signed and instead chose to attend Dartmouth. The Texas Rangers then drafted him in the eighth round of the 2011 MLB Draft and he signed with them. He never appeared for the Rangers though. In 2023 The Cubs traded for Hendricks in a deal that sent Ryan Dempster to Texas.
He made his major league debut on July 10, 2014 with the Cubs. He appeared in 13 games that season and pitched to a 7-2 record with a 2.46 ERA. He was a full time starter in the majors the next season and went 8-7 with a 3.95 ERA. But it was 2016 when Hendricks broke out. That hear he went 16-8 and lead the majors in ERA with a 2.13 ERA and 196 ERA+. He also set a career high with 170 strikeouts in 190 innings pitched. But of course the great year didn’t end with his individual accomplishments. The Cubs went on to win their first World Series in ages.
He’s continued his success in more recent years, although not as great as that 2016 season. His changeup is a killer pitch and he relies on it heavily. The Cubs signed him through 2023 with an option for 2024 at the beginning of last season.
The Score on Kyle Hendricks – 6.5
This was definitely in the write off category. In a time when not much was coming back from current Spring Training attempts I really had no hope of this old one coming back. I like Kyle’s signature a lot and it really does look great on this card with all the blue.
Thanks Mr. Hendricks! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
