The Story of the Autograph
Davey Johnson is a former player and manager in the major leagues. He played from 1965 to 1978 with the Orioles, Braves, Phillies, and Cubs (plus a couple years in Japan). He then managed the Mets, Reds, Orioles, Dodgers and most recently the Nationals.
Johnson was born and raised in Florida and then went to Texas A&M University before signing with the Baltimore Orioles where he would win two World Series Championships as a player. I’m going to skip ahead and focus more on Davey as a manager because that’s how I remember him best. After his time as a player he started managing in the minor leagues. He made it to the Mets farm system and quickly moved through the ranks to manage the big club in 1984.
While taking over a team that hadn’t had much success in about a decade, Johnson became the first manager to lead his team to win 90 games per season for the first five seasons of managing. Of course the peak of this was in 1986 when the Mets won 108 games and then two amazing series with the Astros and Red Sox to win the 1986 World Series. Another great 100-win season in 1988 was foiled by the Dodgers in the playoffs. But Johnson would only last until 1990 when the team started at 20-22 and he was fired. He’s still the winningest manager in Mets history.
A few years later he moved on to Cincinnati where he didn’t find much success until the shortened 1995 season and then moved on to Baltimore. He led the Orioles on a couple of playoff runs but unfortunately had to deal with going up against some great Yankee teams in 1996 (the year of the Jeffrey Maier fiasco) and 1997, which was a Manager of the Year award winning season. Of course he didn’t get along with the owner of the Orioles, Peter Angelos, and resigned. Then it was back to the NL in 1999 and 2000 with the Dodgers.
In 2011 he made it a lot more local to me when he came to the Nationals as their third manager in that season. This was after he had consulted and advised for the team to that point since the 2006 season. He led the team in 2012 when they broke out with a 98-win season, for which he again won a Manager of the Year award, and followed that up with an 86-win season before retiring.

Davey has a nice autograph and I love that he signs this card. ’86 Topps for an ’86 Champ is a good one. Some guy will have cards that they don’t sign, or won’t sign without a fee. That could be because it was a special year, maybe one where they won an award or championship, or maybe it’s an error of some kind and not them. But as a Mets fan I love having this one signed. It could be a better card to show off that signature, but this one is sentimental for me.
