The Story of the Autograph
Pete Redfern is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He spent his entire career in the bigs with the Twins and played from 1976 to 1982.
Redfern was born and raised in California. He was originally drafted by the Cleveland Indians while in high school in the 10th round of the 1972 MLB Draft, but never signed. Four years later the Twins drafted him with the very first pick in the first round of the 1976 MLB Draft while he was at USC. He made his major league debut that same year on May 15, 1976 after pitching just four minor league games.
He went 8-8 in that rookie season with a 3.51 ERA over 23 starts. He mostly worked as a starter, but in 1979 he went 7-3 with a 3.49 ERA in 40 games with only six starts. That was one of this better years in Minnesota. His last season was 1982 when the Twins released him. There was a dispute over how much money he was owed when it was revealed that he had elbow injuries that meant he was owed more money than the Twins payed him.
In March of 1983 he signed with the Dodgers, but never made it back to the bigs. Later that year in October, he almost lost his life in a diving accident. He was left paralyzed and obviously that ended his playing career.
The Score on Pete Redfern – 5.5
Pete really fills up your card with a ton of ink. Yes, it’s kind of a wobbly signature but he really puts a lot on your card and I love it when you cards get filled up. Some of these are a little bit busy and too dark to do a good job showing off his signature though. I do like that I have his 1979 Topps card in what is probably his best season.
Thanks Mr. Redfern! I’m giving this return an 5.5 overall.
