The Story of the Autograph
Bill Stein is a former infielder in the major leagues. He spent fourteen seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers from 1972 to 1985.
Stein was drafted a couple times before he eventually signed. The Orioles drafted him in the 33rd round of the 1968 MLB Draft while he was at Eastern Florida State College and then the Cardinals chose him in the fourth round of the 1969 MLB Draft while he was at Southern Illinois University. He would debut three years later for the Cardinals on September 6, 1972.
He didn’t get too much time in the majors with the Cardinals and they eventually traded him to the California Angels in September of 1973. But before the next season started, he was traded by the Angels to the Chicago White Sox. He stated to get some good time in the majors with Chicago in 1976. But the White Sox left him available for the 1977 Expansion Draft and the Mariners took him with their third pick. Stein didn’t have a problem with that because he didn’t like playing in Comisky Park.
He got some significant time with the Mariners in 1977 and 1978, playing in at least 114 games in each of those years. But after 1978 his playing time decreased. It started in 1979 when a rib injury put him on the disable list. After the Mariners, he moved on to the Rangers as a free agent. He was one of the leagues best pinch hitters in his later years.
After his playing days he managed and coached in high school and the minors. He also was a player-coach in the Senior Professional Baseball Association.

Bill has a pretty tight signature with all the letters of both names being stuck together a bit. I always thought the way he made his “St” in his last name looked more like an “F”. His style is a bit bubbly in places, but not all over. I think the 1981 Fleer card came out the best because it shows off his autograph the best.
