The Story of the Autograph

Mark Thurmond is a left-handed pitcher who worked as both a starter and a reliever during his career. He played from 1983 through 1990 for the San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants.

Thurmond is a native of Texas and attended Texas A&M. The Padres actually drafted him twice, first in the 24th round of the 1978 MLB Draft and then in the 5th round of the 1979 MLB Draft, for him to sign with them. He appeared for the first time in the majors on May 14, 1983. As a rookie he went 7-3 with a 2.65 ERA and received Rookie of the Year votes for his performance.

The next year he did even better, in fact it was the best season of his career going 14-8 with a 2.97 ERA as the Padres went to the World Series. He lost a game to the Cubs during the the NLCS and then again lost to the Tigers in the World Series as well as having a no-decision in Game 5. His ’85 season wasn’t a good one and the Padres traded him to the Tigers in the middle of the 1986 season.

After being traded, he would only start a handful more games in his career. He worked almost exclusively as a reliever for the Tigers, Orioles and Giants. His best outings as a reliever came in that first half season with the Tiger though. He went 4-1 with a 1.92 ERA.

Thurmond bounced a bit after that and was never as strong he was in those first seasons he had with the Padres and Tigers. One thing that is interesting to note is that he never went on the injury list during his career.

I really dig Mark’s signature. There is a ton of action in it. Although in all that action, he kind of appears to “X” it all out too. It’s odd because it’s part of what makes me like it, but then not. Still, it’s a good marker and it looks great on this card. I should note that I’ve only seen Mark sign one card per request.

Thanks Mr. Thurmond! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
