The Story of the Autograph
George Mitterwald is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played for the Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs from 1966 through 1977.
Mitterwald was signed by the Twins as an amateur free agent in April of 1965. He made his debut for them the next year on September 16th. He only played in three games that first season though and spent 1967 back in the minors. He was again back in the major for a cup of coffee in 1968 and appeared in 11 games.
1969 was the year he really got his first chance and appeared in 69 games over that season. His best years were with the Twins in 1970, 1971 and 1973 when he hit double digit homers, drove in over 40 runs and hit .250 plus in each of those years.
The Twins traded him to the Cubs before the 1974 season and he finished out his career in Chicago. After that he coached under some of the managers who he played for (like Billy Martin) and then got into managing in the minors from there.
The Score on George Mitterwald – 6.5
George has a pretty fancy signature. Normally I like a thicker marker, but there’s no way his signature would look good if you couldn’t see all the detail involved. The thinner marker really helps that stick out. All of these cards came from a trip to a card show from last winter so I’m really happy I remembered his name on my list of potential TTM subjects.
Thanks Mr. Mitterwald! This return gets a 6.5.
