The Story of the Autograph

Jon Lieber had a 14-year career in the major leagues as a right-handed starting pitcher. During that time he played for the Pirates, Cubs (twice), Yankees and Phillies. He had one All-Star season and was a twenty game winner in that same season at Chicago.

Lieber grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He went on to eventually attend the University of South Alabama where he caught the eye of major league scouts from the Cubs. Chicago drafted him in the ninth round of the MLB Draft but he did not sign and instead went back to school to help the Jaguars win the Sun Belt Conference Championship. After his senior year in which he was the SBC Player of the Year, the Royals drafted him in the second round of the 1992 draft and he signed. He never appeared for the Royals. They traded him to the Pirates in 1993. He made his major league debut in May of 1994 and went 6-7 with a 3.73 ERA that year.

After several years with the Pirates he was traded to the Cubs. His first year in Chicago he was one game below .500, but then he picked it up going 12-11 in 2000. He led the league in innings and batters faced. In 2001 had his best season, going 20-6 with a 3.80 ERA. He earned an All-Star game appearance and finished fourth in the CY Young voting.

After leaving the Cubs he had a great season in NY at 14-8 and then he moved on to Philadelphia and went 17-13. He finished his time in the majors out in Chicago on a one-year deal, but didn’t make the starting rotation. He worked as the teams long reliever and finished his career with 131 wins, 124 losses and a 4.27 career ERA.

Jon has a really short autograph. His marker wasn’t super strong and it made it a little streaky. Overall it came out OK, but it’s a bit compact and squiggly to make it one of my favorites. I was really surprised that the 1995 Fleer came out as well as it did. Normally those are pretty busy for a signature.

Thanks Mr. Lieber! This one gets a 5.
