The Story of the Autograph
Jeff Suppan was a right-handed starting pitcher in the majors from 1995 through 2012. During that super long career he pitched for several teams: Boston Red Sox (twice), Arizona Diamondbacks, Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates, St. Louis Cardinals (twice), Milwaukee Brewers, and San Diego Padres. I remember him best either with the Brewers or the Cardinals who he won the 2006 World Series with and was the MVP of the 2006 NLCS.
Suppan was born in Oklahoma but went to high school in California. He pitched a no-hitter during a 42-inning scoreless streak in high school and also played first base. He committed to UCLA but was drafted by the Red Sox in 1993 with the 49th overall pick and signed with them. He made his first appearance for the Sox in July of 1995. He moved on to the Diamondbacks for a year after being chosen by them in the 1998 expansion draft.
The Diamond backs traded him to the Royals and he actually stayed there until 2002. He won 10 games each season until 2002 when he went went 9-16 in 33 starts. He went on to Pittsburgh the next year (2003), but was traded back to the Red Sox later in the year. Unfortunately he didn’t play too well during the stretch run. He signed with the Cardinals in 2004 and then things turned around a bit.
The best years of his career were from 2004 to 2006 in his first stint with the Cardinals. He had a winning record ever year and two years of 16 wins in 2004 and 2005. 2006 was of course a special year for the Cards and Suppan was a big part of that postseason and helped them to a World Series Championship.
The Score on Jeff Suppan – 4.5
I wish I had some better cards for Jeff to sign. The Bowman Heritage is almost black and nothing is going to stick out over that. I like the ’09 Topps because when do you get to see a sliding mat on a card? I’ll really need to look for some Cardinals cards from 2004-2006 given those were his best years in the league.
Thanks Mr. Suppan! These get a 4.5.
