The Story of the Autograph
Mike Jacobs played first base in the major leagues from 2005 to 2012. He played with the Mets (twice), Marlins, Royals, and Diamondbacks. These days he’s a manager in the minor leagues for the Miami Marlins.
Jacobs grew up in California and was drafted by the Mets in the 38th round of the 1999 MLB Draft after one year in college. He started our as a catching prospect but because of some lesser defensive skills and an injury he moved to first base. The one thing he could do in the minors was hit and he became a pretty good power hitting prospect.
The Mets brought him up on August 1, 2005 and in his first ever MLB at-bat he hit a pinch-hit three-run homer off of Esteban Loaiza of the Washington Nationals. He became the starting first baseman and hit three home runs in his first four games and slugged .710 in his first few weeks as a major leaguer. The Mets traded Jacobs to the Marlins in the deal for Carlos Delgado. His three years with the Marlins were the longest stint by far with any team in the majors. While there he hit .258 and 69 homers and 224 RBI. His best year was 2008 when he had 32 homers and 93 RBI.
He moved around a whole lot after that. After 123 games with the Royals in 2009 he went on to the Mets and Diamondbacks but only played in 20 more games. In 2010 Jacobs was suspended 50 games while in the Rockies minor league system for testing positive for HGH.
The Score on Mike Jacobs – 4.5
These are done in marker, but the marker is kind of thin and maybe even dying because not many of these came out well. A bigger marker would definitely make his auto a lot stronger. On top of tat at least one of the cards is a bit dark for that type of marker too. Mike definitely has a scratchy style of autograph. The Heritage card came out pretty good. I would love the O-Pee-Chee card to have come out better as that is one of my favorite designs.
Thanks Mr. Jacobs! These get a 4.5.
