The Story of the Autograph

Mark Salas played in the major leagues from 1984 to 1991 as a catcher. While he did start for a little while he was primarily a backup catcher for the Cardinals, Twins, Yankees, White Sox, Indians and Tigers. He’s also one of the few major leaguers to have a palindromic name.

Salas was drafted out of high school by the Cardinals in 1979. He spent five years in their minor league system and came up for a few games in 1984 when he made his major league debut on June 19th. After hits in the first two games he appeared in he went 0-for-17 and went back down to the minor from there. He was taken by Minnesota in the Rule 5 Draft that offseason.

In Minnesota he had a great first season and looked like he would blossom into a good catcher. He took over the job for an All-Star catcher and batted .300 in 120 games while also putting up nine home runs and 41 RBI. But that would be Salas best season as a pro. In 1986 he had a toe injury that took him out of the lineup for a little over a month. By the next season he was splitting time behind the plate again. He was traded to the Yankees after that.

He never really did well with the Yankees and they would end up trading him away to Chicago. After that Salas had stops in Cleveland and Detroit. These days you can find Mark as the bullpen catcher for the White Sox.

Mark has a simple signature. I think the best part is the “S”. It comes out better on some cards than others though. I think my favorite signature of his is on the 1991 Upper Deck card, but that one is so dark that you can’t see it very well. That’s kind of the problem with most of these. I need to see what I can do to get some better cards for him to sign.

Thanks Mr. Salas! I’m giving this return a 5.
