The Story of the Autograph

Kevin Bell played third base in the major leagues in six different seasons between 1976 and 1982 (he did not appear in the majors in 1982). The vast majority of that time he played with the Chicago White Sox, but he also made a few appearances in 1982 with the Athletics.

Bell was drafted in the first round of the 1974 MLB Draft with the seventh overall pick. He had only had one season in college at Mt. San Antonio College. He made it to the majors quickly. So quickly in fact that when he made his debut on June 16, 1976 he was the youngest player in the major leagues at the time. That year he hit an inside the park grand slam against Steve Busby of the Royals (who I also received are card back from recently).

But Kevin never really developed into the player the White Sox thought he could be. He spent a few more years mostly in the minors and only had his second 200+ at bat season in a few years later in 1979. He put up very similar stats to his rookie season (.245ish, 4-5 homers). He regressed a bit the next year and the White Sox cut him.

He was picked up by the Padres in 1981 but never played for them. They traded him to the Athletics for Bob Lacey and Tony Phillips who would have a good career in the majors. Bell on the other hand only had 9 more at bats in his MLB career.

The Score on Kevin Bell – 6.5

Kevin has a really straight forward signature. It’s clear what he is signing and he used a really good marker. It comes out best on the ’81 Fleer card. Even though these cards are from the ends of the time he spent in the majors, he still looks really young. In the ’79 Topps card he looks like a kid.

Thanks Mr. Bell! I’m giving these a 6.5.
