The Story of the Autograph

Tommy Milone is a pitcher who as spent time with the Nationals, Athletics, Twins, Brewers and Mets. He was born and raised in California and after being a standout in high school (including a .474 average and a perfect game in his senior year), went to USC to play for the Trojans. The Nationals drafted him in the 10th round of the 2008 MLB Draft.

I remember his major league debut pretty well as it came against the Mets in September of 2011. I’m sure others feel this way about their teams, but I always feel like my team is the team that lets a pitcher look awesome in his first start. Tommy looked pretty good in that start, although it was only 4 1/3 innings and hit a three-run homer on the first pitch of his first at-bat. But the Nats wouldn’t keep Tommy around and traded him along with Derek Norris and other prospects to the Athletics for Gio Gonzalez that winter.

He started 2012 in the rotation and was the only A’s starter to make it through the season without being injured. He finished that season with a 13-10 record and 3.74 ERA and 137 strikeouts. That season marked is first complete game as well in a win against the Dodgers. Milone also started Game 2 of the ALDS but lost to a no-decision in the ninth. The next two years split time between the majors and minors and he asked for a trade in 2014.

Since then Milone has been up and down in the majors and minor with different teams. He seems to be a guy that can make some spot starts when others are injured. Right now he’s back in the Nats organization.

Tommy as a nice signature. He uses a great marker and signs in a really clean style. I think these cards just didn’t lend themselves to a higher score because of the dark background. But given the way this looks I wouldn’t mind trying to find some more of Tommy’s cards to have him sign.

Thanks Mr. Milone! I’m giving these a 7.5.
