The Story of the Autograph
Gill Fenerty, affectionately known as “Gill the Thrill,” carved a unique path through professional football, showcasing his talents across multiple leagues and continents. From his early days in New Orleans to his impactful stints in Canada and the NFL, Fenerty’s career is a testament to adaptability and determination.
Born on August 24, 1963, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Fenerty attended Jesuit High School, where he excelled in football. He went to the College of the Holy Cross in Massachusetts, seeking a balance between academics and athletics. At Holy Cross, Fenerty became a standout running back, setting multiple school records. He amassed 3,670 rushing yards, becoming the all-time leading rusher in both Holy Cross and New England history. His accolades include multiple All-New England and All-East selections, as well as being named a first-team All-American in his senior year.
Fenerty began his professional career in 1986 with the Bolzano Jets of the Italian Football League. In just five games, he rushed for 610 yards, helping the Jets reach the league semifinals.
In 1987, Fenerty joined the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL. His rookie season was remarkable; he rushed for 879 yards and caught 53 passes, earning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Rookie Award. Over the next two seasons, he continued to excel, setting a team record with 1,247 rushing yards in 1989. Fenerty was a CFL All-Star in each of his three seasons with Toronto.
Fenerty’s NFL journey began when he was drafted by the New Orleans Saints in the seventh round of the 1986 NFL Draft. He joined the Saints in 1990, fulfilling his dream of playing for his hometown team. Over two seasons, he played in 31 games, rushing for 832 yards and scoring five rushing touchdowns. He also contributed as a receiver and return specialist.
After spending the 1992 and 1993 seasons on injured reserve due to knee operations, Fenerty returned to the CFL in 1994 with the Shreveport Pirates, appearing in two games before retiring.

Gill has a pretty open and messy signature. Unfortunately the marker didn’t really hold up well for him on all these and also, there’s the black Saint jerseys that don’t tend to help either. I think my favorite of these is the 1992 GameDay card. I got a bunch of those off a Craig’s List buy a few years ago so I love getting those back successfully.
