The Story of the Autograph
Tony Granato, a dynamic winger and respected coach, has left a lasting mark on the world of hockey. Known for his grit, scoring touch, and leadership, Granato enjoyed a successful playing career in the NHL before transitioning to coaching, where his impact has been equally profound.
Anthony Lewis Granato was born on July 25, 1964, in Downers Grove, Illinois. He grew up in a sports-oriented family and developed a passion for hockey at a young age. Granato honed his skills at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he played for the Badgers from 1983 to 1987. He was a standout player, leading the team in scoring and earning All-American honors.
His strong performance in college caught the attention of NHL scouts, leading to his selection by the New York Rangers in the sixth round (120th overall) of the 1982 NHL Entry Draft.

Granato’s career also included a stint with the San Jose Sharks, where his leadership and work ethic helped guide a young roster. Over 13 NHL seasons, Granato recorded 248 goals and 492 points in 773 games. He was known not only for his scoring but also for his resilience, bouncing back from injuries and always playing with intensity.
After retiring as a player in 2001, Granato quickly transitioned to coaching. He became an assistant coach for the Colorado Avalanche before being promoted to head coach in 2002. Under his leadership, the Avalanche reached the playoffs, and Granato earned respect for his calm demeanor and strategic mind.
Granato later served as an assistant coach for the Pittsburgh Penguins. In 2016, he returned to his alma mater as the head coach of the University of Wisconsin’s men’s hockey team. His influence helped rejuvenate the program, emphasizing player development and a strong team culture.
Granato also coached Team USA at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, leading a young and primarily collegiate roster. His international coaching role highlighted his ability to inspire and mentor players at all levels of the game.
Off the ice, Granato is part of a well-known hockey family. His sister, Cammi Granato, is a Hockey Hall of Famer and one of the most accomplished women’s players in history. This is a tough one from Tony. He has a nice signature with a lot of action in it, and I always like a good capital “G”. Unfortunately signing over a black Los Angeles Kings jersey is a tough task. The 1990 Topps card is the better of the two. Something I should note is that my returns from Tony came after sending to him at the University of Wisconsin, but I don’t think he is coaching there any longer.
