The Story of the Autograph
Stanley Morgan played wide receiver in the NFL for 14 years with the New England Patriots (1977-1989) and the Indianapolis Colts (1990). It’s kind of funny how some of my TTM’s come back because this is another player who went to Tennessee and played in the NFL.
Morgan grew up in South Carolina and played for a school that won the state championship in 1972. He went on to play as a Volunteer and played in multiple positions in his four years there. He was primarily used as a wide receiver but also rushed the ball further into his college career. Including his rushing, receiving and return numbers he had some great overall stats in college:
- 1973: 852 total yards and 4 total TDs
- 1974: 1587 total yards and 14 total TDs
- 1975: 1169 total yards and 10 total TDs
- 1976: 1034 total yards and 11 total TDs
The Patriots selected him in the first round of the 1977 NFL Draft with the 25th pick and even though he played a lot of running back, his speed was a difference maker and the Pats made him a wide receiver. He was great in New England. He topped 1,000 yards receiving three times in his career. His best season was probably 1986 when he had almost 1500 yards and ten touchdowns. He was traded to the Colts after 13 years with the Patriots and at the tim he held nearly every receiving record that was possible.

Stanley concentrates a bit more on his first name than his last name, but both look like he starts and then stops the signature in the middle of each name. I love those ’82 Topps football cards. They were always my favorites think because of the helmets. I’m glad that one came back signed. But really the 1990 Fleer card came out the best. That blue Sharpie really stands out on that one.
