The Story of the Autograph

Tim Krumrie was a nose tackle in the NFL from 1983 through 1994 and spent his entire career with the Cincinnati Bengals. Raised on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, he went played high school football in addition to wrestling. He was good enough at wrestling to win the heavyweight state title in 1979. Since 2009, the best high school defensive lineman in the state of Wisconsin is given the Tim Krumrie award.

Krumrie went on to play for the Wisconsin Badgers. He was recruited as an inside linebacker but switched to nose tackle. He would lead the Badgers in tackles every year he played and was a three time All-Big Ten players. When he left school he was the leading tackler for his career at the school but that record has since been broken. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2010.

The Bengals chose him with the 276th pick in the 1983 draft. That’s the tenth round and it no longer exists in the draft. He would go to the Pro Bowl in 1987 and 1988 and was a First-team All-Pro in 1988. But what Tim is probably best remembered for his for his horrendous leg injury in Super Bowl XXIII. This was the first really bad injury that I remember seeing live (not in-person, but live on TV). He was taking on two 49ers blockers and trying to tackle Roger Craig when his lower leg just snapped from the pressure of his weight and the pushing off he was doing. Tim tried to stay at the game and refused to go to the hospital but did after paramedics told him he may go into shock. He would go on to play 6 more years and lead his team in tackles in 1992.

Tim has a solid autograph, but one of the cards isn’t great for showing it off. It’s a little lazy on the lower case letter but that’s OK. I do wonder about the line under the “69” though. Is that one of those “this is the bottom” type of lines you see under 6’s and 9’s sometimes? Probably not. It might just be his style but it makes me wonder.

Thanks Mr. Krumrie. These get a 5.
