The Story of the Autograph

Jim Adduci is a former outfielder and infielder in the major leagues. He played between 1983 and 1989, primarily with the Milwaukee Brewers, but also with the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies.

Adduci was born on August 9, 1959, in Chicago, Illinois. Growing up in the Windy City, Adduci developed a passion for baseball at an early age, playing in local leagues and honing his skills as a young athlete. Adduci attended Southern Illinois University, where he played college baseball and further developed his abilities. His performance at Southern Illinois caught the attention of MLB scouts, and in 1980, Adduci was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 7th round of the MLB Draft. This marked the beginning of his professional baseball journey.

His professional career officially began in the Cardinals’ farm system, where he spent several years working his way up through the minor leagues. Adduci’s hard work paid off when he made his MLB debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on September 12, 1983. However, his time with the Cardinals was brief, as he appeared in only a handful of games before being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1984.

With the Brewers, Adduci found a bit more stability, but he still faced the challenges of being a journeyman player in the 1980s—a time when the competition for roster spots was fierce, and players often moved between teams. During the 1986 season, Adduci saw his most extensive action in the majors, playing in 44 games for the Brewers. He primarily served as an outfielder and pinch-hitter, contributing as needed but never quite securing a regular starting role.

After his stint with the Brewers, Adduci spent time with the Philadelphia Phillies organization, though he did not see much playing time in the majors. His career in MLB was characterized by short stints with teams, a common experience for journeyman players of the era who moved frequently in search of opportunities to play.

Following his MLB career, Jim Adduci continued to play professional baseball, exploring opportunities both in the minor leagues and internationally. Like many players of his era, Adduci’s love for the game kept him involved in baseball even after his major league days were over. He spent time playing in the minors and in various independent leagues, where he continued to contribute as a veteran presence and mentor to younger players.

Adduci’s career extended beyond the traditional path, as he explored opportunities in international leagues, including a stint in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) with the Kintetsu Buffaloes in 1987. His time in Japan allowed him to experience the game in a different cultural context, and he adapted to the style of play in NPB, showcasing the versatility and determination that had defined his career.

This is a great return from Jim. I always love when the marker used goes with the colors of the team on the cards, and this one doesn’t disappoint in that area. I think the best version of these is the 1989 Fleer card as that one has a really bright image that shows off the autograph really well.

Thanks Mr. Adduci! I’m giving this return a 6.
