The Story of the Autograph
Bob Johnson is a former pitcher in the major leagues. The right-hander played as both a starter and reliever from 1969 to 1977 with the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, and Atlanta Braves.
Johnson is a native of Illinois and went to Bradley University. He was signed as an amateur free agent by the Mets before the 1964 season. He debuted for the Mets on September 19, 1969 but after the season was traded to the Royals with Amos Otis for Joe Foy. He played a season with Kansas City and was traded again with Jim Campanis and Jackie Hernandez to the Pirates for Bruce Dal Canton, Jerry May, and Freddie Patek.
He spent the next three years with the Pirates. The first two years he spent mostly as a starter and then a reliever towards the end of his time there. In 1971 he went 9-10 with a 3.45 ERA in 31 games with 27 starts on a team that would win the 1971 World Series. He won a game in the NLCSĀ and played in two games in the Series with one loss. He was also part of the team that went to the NLCS the following year and lost to the Reds.
The Pirates traded him to the Indians after the 1973 season for a minor leaguer and the following season he was selected off waivers by the Rangers. From there he bounced around until the 1977 season when the Braves got him into 15 games.
The Score on Bob Johnson – 6.0
This is a nice return from Bob. Like some other signers, it looks like he tends to sign the side of the card vertically. That really works on the 1974 Topps card because there’s a great place to sign there. Not as much on the 1972 card.
Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving this return a 6.
