The Story of the Autograph

Rick Wise is a former starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1964 to 1982 with the Philadelphia Phillies, St. Louis Cardinals, Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, and San Diego Padres.

Wise was born in Michigan and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He helped his Rose City Little League team reach the Little League World Series in 1958. The Phillies signed him as an amateur free agent in 1963 and he made his major league debut on April 18, 1964. He pitched in 25 games that first season but was back down to the minors for the whole 1965 season.

He became a solid pitcher in Philadelphia and won more than 10 games for them four times with his high being 17 in 1971. That was the year he made his first All-Star appearance going 17-14 with a 2.88 ERA in 38 games and 272.1 innings pitched. Wise was then involved in the trade for Steve Carlton in 1972 and made his way to St. Louis. He would played the next two seasons in St. Louis, winning 16 games each year and making his second All-Star appearance.

At the end of the 1973 season he was traded to the Boston Red Sox with Bernie Carbo for Reggie Smith and Ken Tatum. He had a career-high 19 wins in 1975 on the Red Sox run to the World Series which they would lose to Cincinnati. The Red Sox would move him to Cleveland prior to the 1978 season along with Ted Cox, Bo Diaz and Mike Paxton in exchange for Dennis Eckersley and Fred Kendall. He would end his career in San Diego with the Padres.

After retirement he would coach in the minors for a few teams. He mostly was a pitching coach and once was an interim manager.

Rick has a nice signature. You can see he tried to put his signature in a place that it can be read easily. I think I have more cards of his so I would hope I can get him in all of the uniforms he was in for his career. I think my favorite is the 1977 Topps card, although the 1976 design is my favorite in general.

Thanks Mr. Wise! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
