The Story of the Autograph

Scott Hemond is a former catcher in the major leagues. He played from 1989 to 1995 with the Oakland Athletics (twice), Chicago White Sox, and St. Louis Cardinals.

Hemond was born in Massachusetts but grew up in Florida. He was drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals in the fifth round of the 1983 MLB Draft but chose to go to college. He went to the University of South Florida and played on the highest ranked Bulls team in the school’s history and was a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award. Then in 1986 the Oakland Athletics made him the twelth overall pick in the first round of the 1986 MLB Draft.

After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut on September 9, 1989. He was mostly up and down for his entire seven year career. The most games he would play was 91 in both 1993 and 1994 while in Oakland for the second time. While he was listed as a catcher he would play all over the diamond. His best year in the majors was 1993 when he hit .256 with six homers and 26 RBI (all career highs).

These were two returns that I got back very close to each other. It happens to me once in a while and usually because one return was out for a pretty long time. In this case Scott had one out for a over a year and the other only about two months. I like his signature but there was a lot of rubbing on two of these in the first return. I think my favorite card of this whole bunch would have been the 1990 Score card if it hadn’t been so rubbed.

Thanks Mr. Hemond! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
