The Story of the Autograph

Bill Hanzlik is a former forward in the NBA. He played from 1980 to 1990 with the Seattle SuperSonics and the Denver Nuggets.

Hanzlik was born in Ohio. He went to high school in both Oregon and Wisconsin before heading to Notre Dame and playing there from 1976 to 1980. In 1980 he was selected to play in the Olympics. However, the U.S. boycotted the Moscow games and he didn’t get to play, later receiving a Congressional Gold Medal created specifically for athletes from that year. During that summer the SuperSonics drafted him with the 20th pick in the first round of the NBA Draft.

Primarily a bench player over the years, he started with two seasons in Seattle. He started the most games he would in any season there in his second year of 1981-’82 with 74 games, and didn’t have more than 14 starts in any season after that. He averaged just under six points while with the Sonics.

Seattle traded the defensive specialist with a first round pick to the Nuggets for David Thompson. Hanzlik would spend the rest of his career in Denver. His best seasons there point-wise were 1985-’86 and 1986-’87 with 12.5 and 13 points respectively. He played his final games in 1990.

After his playing career he went into coaching with Charlotte and Atlanta as an assistant. Then in 1997 he was made the head coach of the Nuggets to replace Dick Motta. Unfortunately he won only eleven games (not much better than the all time worst team in league history) and was fired. He later was an analyst for Nuggets games.

The Score on Bill Hanzlik – 6.5

Bill puts a good amount of ink on your cards and really fills things up. Not that you would really notice that on the 1990 Skybox card. It’s kind of hard to sign a black card, but he was working wiht what I gave him on that one. I do like the 1990 Fleer card so it was nice to have two of them.

Thanks Mr. Hanzlik! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
