The Story of the Autograph
John Pacella is a former pitcher in the major leagues. The right-handed reliever played in six seasons between 1977 and 1986 with the New York Mets, New York Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, Detroit Tigers.
Pacella was born in Brooklyn and grew up on Long Island in New York. He was drafted out of high school by the New York Mets in the fourth round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut three years later on September 15, 1977. He pitched in just three games and four innings in that first year but came out of it with a 0.00 ERA.
After spending 1978 in the minors, he was made four appearances in 1979 and then was up with the big club for a career high 32 appearances with 15 starts in 1980 for the Mets. He had a 3-4 record that year with a 5.14 ERA over 84 innings. That was his only full season in the majors. He was traded to the Padres in a deal that brought Randy Jones to the Mets. But the Padres sent him back to New York, this time to the Yankees, with Jerry Mumphrey. In return they got Ruppert Jones, Joe Lefebvre, Tim Lollar and Chris Welsh.
He spent another year in the minors with the Yankees in 1981 before appearing in the majors with them in 1982. But he was dealt again, this time to the Minnesota Twins, with Larry Milbourne and Pete Filson for Butch Wynegar and Roger Erickson. He was traded again after the season and spent another full year in the minors.
He made it back to have stints with the Orioles and Tigers, with another year in the minors in 1985.
The Score on John Pacella – 8.0
This is a great return from John. The blue marker sticks out really well on these cards. He also seemed to really sign in the perfect place on each card to make his signature work. I like the way he works his “J” to do a little underline of just his first name. He played for so many teams but I don’t really know if he has more cards than what I have here. If he does I’d love to try again to get him represented in some other uniforms.
Thanks Mr. Pacella! I’m giving this return an 8.
