The Story of the Autograph
Andrew Cassels is a former center in the NHL. His career spanned sixteen seasons from 1989 to 2006. During that time he played for the Montreal Canadiens, Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Washington Capitals.
Cassels is a native of Ontario, Canada. The Canadiens drafted him with the seventeenth overall pick in the 1987 NHL Draft. This was while he was playing some great seasons in the OHL witht he Ottawa 67’s, including a year where he won the league’s MVP award. He debuted on November 19, 1989 and scored in his first career shift and with his first career shot. He only played 6 games that first season and 54 in his second.
He was traded to Hartford where he played really well. One of the best seasons in his career came in his fourth overall season and second with the Whalers, 1992-93. That season he score an almost career high 21 goals (he would have 22 in his final season with the Whale). But he had by far a career high in assists with 64 that year for 85 total points. He moved on to the Flames just as the Whalers were becoming the Carolina Hurricanes.
He sort of bounced around for the remainder of his career. He found more offensive success in Vancouver for a few years. He then reunited with Geoff Sanderson, an old linemate from Hartford, while with Columbus and they regained a bit of what they had with the Whalers. Injuries and the NHL lockout changed things a bit as he finished up with the Caps in his final season.
He would later coach in the ECHL.
The Score on Andrew Cassels – 7.0
There isn’t really too much to Andrew’s signature. I think I can maybe see four letters total in his. It kind of looks like maybe “Ad” and “Cl”. The way he writes the “A” it almost looks like it’s a start or an asterisk. I hope I can find some cards of his as a Whaler because that’s really how I think of him in his career.
Thanks Mr. Cassels! I’m giving this return a 7.
