The Story of the Autograph
Bob Sykes is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1977 to 1981 and worked both as a starter and a reliever for the Detroit Tigers and St. Louis Cardinals.
Sykes is a native of New Jersey. He went to Miami Dade College and was drafted by the Tigers in the 19th round of the 1974 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with them on April 9, 1977. His second season with the Tigers was his best overall. That season he went 6-6 with a career low 3.94 ERA in 22 games with ten starts.
The Tigers traded him to the Cardinals in December of 1978 with John Murphy for Aurelio Lopez and Jerry Morales. He played for three seasons with the Cardinals and only had a winning record in his final season, but that was just 2-0. But probably the best thing he did for the Cardinals was be part of another trade. In October of 1981 he was traded to the Yankees (although he would never play in the majors again). In return the Cardinals got Willie McGee.
The Score on Bob Sykes – 6.5
Bob looks like he signs cards in the same spot every time based on this return. In the 1981 Fleer card it almost looks like he signs as “Sy kes” with a space in there. The 1980 Topps card is another that reminds me that I hate those facsimile signatures on cards.
Thanks Mr. Sykes! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
