The Story of the Autograph
Von Hayes is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1981 to 1992 with the Cleveland Indians, Philadelphia Phillies, and California Angels.
Hayes is a native of California. He went to college at St. Mary’s and was drafted from there in the seventh round of the 1979 MLB Draft by the Indians. A couple years later he made his major league debut with them on April 14, 1981. His first two major league seasons were in Cleveland until he was involved in a five-for-one trade. The Indians traded him to the Phillies for Jay Baller, Julio Franco, Manny Trillo, George Vukovich and Jerry Willard.
He then spent the majority of the rest of this career in Philadelphia, until his final season in 1992. He was a good player with some great moments. He earned MVP votes in 1986 when he led the league in runs with 107 and he earned his one-and-only All-Star nod in 1989. That year he had one of his best years with 26 homers, 78 RBI, 28 steals, and a .259 average. In 1985 he became the first player to hit two home runs in an inning against the Mets.
In more recent years he’s coached in the minor leagues and was the California League Manager of the Year in 2004 and the Texas League Manager of the Year in 2005.
The Score on Von Hayes – 6.5
Von has always had a nice signature with a few cool pieces to it. The first is the tail on his “V” that spans most of the signature. The second is the thin loop on his “H” as he crosses it and the third is the loop on his “y” that helps balance the top of the signature. These are nice but non of these cards really seem to give a spot to shine.
Thanks Mr. Hayes! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
