The Story of the Autograph
Mark Grudzielanek is a former middle infielder in the major leagues. He played mostly at shortstop, especially in the beginning of his career and then mostly at second base toward the end of his career. He played for the Montreal Expos, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, and Cleveland Indians.
Grudzielanek was born in Milwaukee and grew up in Texas where he played baseball and basketball. He was first drafted by the Mets in the 1989 MLB Draft while he was in high school but he chose not to sign. He then went to Trinidad State College in Colorado and was drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eleventh round of the 1991 MLB Draft. After a successful run in their minor league system he made his major league debut on April 28, 1995.
In just his second season he got the majority of the playing time. In 153 games he hit .306 with six homers, 49 RBI, 33 stolen bases and 34 doubles to earn an All-Star game appearance. That would be the only of his career though. They would trade him to the Dodgers in the 1998 season where he would move to second base after a few years with Alex Cora playing short.
The Dodgers then sent him to the Cubs in 2002 along with Eric Karros in a deal that brought them Chad Hermansen and Todd Hundley. He would then move to the Cardinals, Royals where he won a Gold Glove in 2006 and finally the Indians.
No matter where he stopped he could hit. Aside from his first season, he never his below .271 in any season. That included five seasons over .300 and two over .290. His career high average was .326 in 1999 for the Dodgers. He would later go on to coach in the minors in the Diamondbacks and White Sox systems.
The Score on Mark Grudzielanek – 6.5
Mark sure has a lot of ground to cover with his signature, and all those letters. That certainly gives him enough to go edge to edge on the card and he angles his signature as well for a little more room. These look really great with the blue in all these uniforms. I really hope I can find an Expos or Cubs card for him to sign on a later attempt.
Thanks Mr. Grudzielanek! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
