The Story of the Autograph

Chris Welsh is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He worked as both a starter and a reliever from 1981 to 1986 with the San Diego Padres, Montreal Expos, Texas Rangers, and Cincinnati Reds.

Welsh was born in Delaware and grew up in Ohio. He went on to attend the University of South Florida after high school. He was drafted twice, both times by the Yankees, before he signed. The first time he was drafted was in the 24th round of the 1976 MLB Draft. Then a year later he was drafted in the 21st round. But he never appeared with New York in the majors. In 1981 they traded him with Ruppert Jones, Joe Lefebvre and Tim Lollar to the Padres for Jerry Mumphrey and John Pacella. He would make his major league debut with the Padres on April 12, 1981.

He played two and half years with the Padres. His best season was in 1982 when he went 8-8 with a 4.91 ERA in 28 appearances with 20 starts. His contract was purchased by the Expos in 1983 and then they moved him to Texas in 1984 in a deal for Dave Hostetler. He had one more stop in Cincinnati before his major league career ended with his last appearance on October 5, 1986.

Welsh has been part of the Reds broadcast team since 1993.

The Score on Chris Welsh – 6.5

Chris puts a good amount of ink on your cards. That’s at least partly due to the thing marker he used on this effort. But he does a good job with a good sized signature in general. I think this marker was a little two think for me if I had to be picky (and I don’t have to be).

Thanks Mr. Welsh! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
