The Story of the Autograph

James McCann is a catcher in the major leagues. He’s been playing in the majors since 2014 with the Detroit Tigers and since then has played for the Chicago White Sox and currently for the New York Mets.

McCann was born and raised in Southern California. The White Sox drafted him out of high school in the 31st round of the 2008 MLB Draft but he chose not to sign. Instead he went on to attend the University of Arkansas and play for the Razorbacks. In 2009 he was part of a group of future major leagues to help them reach the College World Series. In his junior year he came in as a semi-finalist for the Johnny Bench award for the best college catcher.

The Tigers chose him with their second round pick in the 2011 MLB Draft. He would make his major league debut on September 1, 2014 and won the backup job the season after. Since then he’s reliably played in over 100 games every year (except for the shortened 2020 season). In 2019 he moved on to the White Sox as a free agent. He earned his first All-Star appearance that year and caught Lucas Giolito’s no-hitter the following year.

Before last season he signed with the Mets. He’s currently in the second year of a four year deal.

First, I love this card of James’. He kind of looks like some kind of gladiator with all the gear on. Second, I think his signature is pretty cool I like the loopy “J” and I actually don’t see many people with a “Mc” name doing their “c” like that. I gotta find him in a Mets uniform. I think he is a one-per type of guy.

Thanks Mr. McCann! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
