The Story of the Autograph
Steve Balboni is a former first baseman and designated hitter in the major leagues. He played from 1981 to 1993 with the New York Yankees (twice), Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.
Balboni is a native New Englander who was born in Massachusetts and raised in New Hampshire. He went to college at Eckerd College in Florida. The Yankees drafted him with a second round pick in the 1978 MLB Draft primarily for the power he showed at the plate. He made his major league debut three years later on April 22, 1981.
In his first three years with the Yankees he played in just 69 games, with his high being 33 in 1982. But they didn’t see the same power right away that he was showing in the minors and traded him to the Kansas City Royals with Roger Erickson for Mike Armstrong and a minor leaguer.
From there he was able to get some playing time and show some pop. He would never hit for great average with the Royals, topping out at .244 which was the second highest average he would put up in his career in a year with significant playing time. He also lead the league in strikeouts with them in 1985 with 166. But he also his between 24 and 36 bombs for them in the four full years he was there. Balboni was also part of the Royals World Series winning 1985 team.
After his time in Kansas City he moved around a little. The Royals released him in the middle of 1988 and he signed with the Mariners. The Mariners then traded him to New York in 1989 where he was through 1990. He was in the minors in 1991 and 1992 and tried to make a comeback with the Rangers in 1993 before retiring.
The Score on Steve Balboni – 6.5
I tried Steve before this and it failed and I think I used the same address. Not sure what was going on there, but that made me more glad to get this one back. Steve is a guy I somehow link with another guy for some reason… Rick Cerone. I think they both have mustaches, they both played in the Bronx, they both seem to sign one card per request… whatever it is I link them.
Thanks Mr. Balboni! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
