The Story of the Autograph
Craig Stammen is currently a major league relief pitcher. He’s played for the San Diego Padres since 2017 and prior to that was with the Washington Nationals from 2009 to 2015.
Stammen was born and raised in Ohio. He played football and basketball in addition to baseball in high school. He went on to attend the University of Dayton. The Nationals drafted him in the twelfth round of the 2005 MLB Draft. He debuted for them four years later on May 21, 2009.
He started with the Nationals as a starter for the first couple years. He went 4-7 and 4-4 in those first two years but maybe more importantly his ERA was very high at 5+ over those 54 appearances and 19 starts. After 2011 where he only appeared in seven games, he came back great as a reliever starting in 2012. That year he went 6-1 and had a 2.34 ERA in 59 appearances and 88.1 innings pitched.
At the end of 2015 he was non-tendered by the Nationals and signed a minor league deal with the Indians and didn’t make an appearance in the big leagues in 2016. Then he signed with the Padres and has had a few more pretty good seasons with them, aside from maybe 2020 when his ERA ballooned to 5.63 a bit out of nowhere. The sinkerballer should be back again for the Padres in 2022.
The Score on Craig Stammen – 7.0
Craig has a good signature but I just wish that glove wasn’t blocking it. I really need to find some Nationals cards of his though because that really how I think of him. I know I’ve seen him pitch a lot in person over the years because I live in the DC area and he pitched a lot while here. Hopefully I can find a Nats card or two.
Thanks Mr. Stammen! I’m giving this return a 7.
