The Story of the Autograph
Ruben Amaro, Jr. is a former switch-hitting outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1991 to 1998 with the California Angels, Philadelphia Phillies (twice), and Cleveland Indians. He was later a General Manager for the Phillies and a coach for the Boston Red Sox and New York Mets.
Amaro was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His father played in the majors and he was batboy for the Phillies from 1980 to 1983. He played baseball and soccer in high school and went to college at Stanford. He was part of the Cardinal team that won the 1987 College World Series and led the team in a few categories. The Angels drafted him in the 11th round of the MLB Draft that year. He made his major league debut for them a few years later on June 8, 1991.
In December of 1991 he was traded to the Phillies with Kyle Abbot for Von Hayes. In 1992 he made it into 126 games, hitting .219 with seven homers and 34 RBI, but that was the most playing time he’d receive in a season. It was far more than almost all other seasons except 1997, when after he went to Cleveland and back to Philly when he played in 117 games. For his career he was a .235 hitter with 16 home runs, 100 RBI and 15 stolen bases.
The Score on Ruben Amaro – 7.5
Ruben has a nice signature but really it just came out great on these cards. My favorite part of his signature is the “A” and mostly the loops he puts at the bottom of it. The other reason this is special to me is just because my kids loved The Goldbergs. When this one came in they actually had an idea who the person was.
Thanks Mr. Amaro! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
