The Story of the Autograph
Lamar Johnson is a former first baseman and designated hitter in the major leagues. He played from 1974 to 1982 primarily with the Chicago White Sox before closing out his career with the Texas Rangers.
Johnson is an Alabama native and was drafted out of high school by the White Sox in the third round of the 1968 MLB Draft. After several years in their minor league system, he made his major league debut on May 18, 1974. His first two years only saw him appear in 18 games but in 1976 he appeared in half the games for the Sox and it went up from there. Those 82 games of hitting .320 with four homers and 33 RBI were impressive enough to make him a regular in the coming years.
He played some great seasons in the following years. He hit over .300 two more times with a .302 average in 1977 and a .309 average in 1979. He hit homers in the teens with 18 as his career high and drove in between 65 and 81 runs in those late ’70s years. If there was a great day in his career it was probably a day in June of 1977 when he sang the National Anthem and hit two homers to account for the only runs in a 2-1 victory.
He moved on to the Rangers in free agency and after his playing days were done he went into coaching. He started with the Brewers in 1988 and worked in the minors and the majors. He eventually did the same with the Royals, Mariners and Mets.
The Score on Lamar Johnson – 7.0
I like the way Lamar uses all of the card. The 1983 Topps card is a great example of a well-centered, and well-sized autograph. The other two cards didn’t give him a great opportunity to show of his signature and the 1983 Topps card didn’t take it so well. I really hope I can find more White Sox cards of his because of how long he played for them in his career.
Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving this return a 7.
