The Story of the Autograph
Danny Schayes is a former center in the NBA. His career spanned from 1981 to 1999. During that time he played for the Utah Jazz, Denver Nuggets, Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, Miami Heat, and Orlando Magic.
Schayes is the son of the late Dolph Schayes who is an NBA Hall of Famer. He was born and raised in the Syracuse, New York area. He went to Syracuse and was a back up until his senior season, but was named to the 1981 All-Big East team and was an All-American and Academic All-American. The Jazz selected him with the thirteenth overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft and was the second center drafted that year.
Schayes was mostly a bench player during his career. Aside from his eight seasons in Denver where most of his starts came, he moved around a lot, especially after his time with the Bucks in the 1993-’94 season. The most playing time he averaged was in his second year in Utah when he reach 32.8 minutes per game, but was never again over 30 in his career. His highest point production was in 1987-’88 with Denver when he averaged 13.9 points per game. He would only average more than 10 points per game five times in his career. All that said, he found a way to earn spots and find a role on teams and play twenty years in the league with twelve of those years being part of playoff teams.
The Score on Dan Schayes – 5.5
Dan has a lot going on with his signature but unfortunately the nature of basketball cards doesn’t let it show off very well. There are a couple with a smudge or just plain marker issues. I think my favorite is the 1989 NBA Hoops card. I’m glad I had cards of him from the team that he played the longest with.
Thanks Mr. Schayes! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
