The Story of the Autograph

Bill Scherrer is a former left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1982 to 1988 with the Cincinnati Reds, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles, and Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherrer is a native of Tonawanda, New York. He was drafted twice before signing with a major league team. First he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the sixth round of the 1976 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. Then he was drafted by the Reds in the first round with the first overall pick of the 1977 MLB Draft Secondary Phase. He made his major league debut on September 7, 1982.

He became a regular in 1983 when he pitched in 73 games for the Reds, all in relief, and put up a 2-3 record with a 2.74 ERA. The Reds traded him to the Tigers in August of 1984 in return for Carl Willis. He was lucky enough to be with the Tigers for their 1984 World Series Championship. He didn’t appear in the playoffs but did appear in three games in the World Series. He went back to the Reds in 1987 and then moved around to to Baltimore and Philadelphia the next season.

In more recent years he’s worked as a scout. That included time with the Marlins and White Sox when they won championships in 1997 and 2005.

The Score on Bill Scherrer – 6.0

Bill has an interesting signature. As a fellow Bill, I find his “B” has the top half but not the bottom. The rest of his first name is recognizable but that bottom bubble of the “B” is missing to me. The “S” in his last name is just huge. But both of those things definitely make his signature stick out in a good way. You would recognize this as his on a ball with multiple names on it for instance. I think of all of these I like the 1984 Topps card or the 1987 Topps card the best.

Thanks Mr. Scherrer! I’m giving this return a 6.
