The Story of the Autograph

Gaylord Perry is a former right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues. He played for 22 seasons from 1962 to 1983. During that time he played for the San Francisco Giants, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers (twice), San Diego Padres, New York Yankees, Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and Kansas City Royals.

Perry was born and raised in North Carolina. He played football and basketball in addition to baseball growing up and was All State before giving up football. He and his brother would help the basketball team to the state finals during their time in high school. He played third base and the pitched later in his high school career. He went on to attend Campbell University. He was signed by the Giants as an amateur free agent in June of 1958 and would debut for them several years later on April 14, 1962.

He is famous, or maybe more infamous for throwing a spitball or otherwise doctoring baseballs. But I think in general there were a lot of times that hitters thought he was and there was a mental game happening with him. Either way, Perry made five All-Star teams, won two Cy Young Awards, and led the league in Wins three times. He pitched a no hitter in 1968 while with the Giants.

He spent the longest time with the Giants of any other team. Then after a four years with the Indians and three with the Rangers, he really bounced around a whole bunch to close out his career. Although that “closing out” was an additional 6-7 seasons. Ultimately he got his 300th win in 1982 and would be voted into the Hall of Fame in 1991 in his third year of eligibility.

The Score on Gaylord Perry – 5.5

This big thing that impacts the score on this one is the ball point pen. Gaylord has a really pretty signature but the ball point pen is not a favorite of mine in the grand scheme. The other thing that happened on this one was that I thought he charged a different amount. I’m glad he still signed one of my cards instead of sending everything back (or maybe not sending anything back at all.

Thanks Mr. Perry! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
